FAQ

Who is ZENCH?
“Zench” was the family nickname for my dad, Jim Zenya Miyazaki, who was born in Tacoma, Washington. As a teenager, Zench, his three siblings and mother were forced to move to the government-created camps at Pindale, Tule Lake and Heart Mountain. His father, my grandfather, was a local community leader in Tacoma. He was arrested on the night of December 7th and sent to Department of Justice camps in Montana and New Mexico. He was separated from the family for 18 months, before being reunited at Tule Lake.

How does it work?
I work with the print-on-demand company Gelato, who produces the products and ships them to you. I set the profit margin for each product, in most cases between $8.00-12.00, and donate100% of that profit to the organization associated with each item. You will receive a copy of the online receipt within a week of the purchase.

What organizations benefit from the sales of ZENCH items?
Currently, sales benefit The Heart Mountain Wyoming Foundation, The Japanese American National Museum, Densho and
The Fred T. Korematsu Institute. Click on each product to see who your purchase benefits.

What’s in it for you?
I consider the ZENCH shop to be a part of my art practice. I’m motivated by having found a creative way to educate and promote discussion about the Japanese incarceration.
